America saves one, eliminates one Palm Beach County ‘Voice’ hopeful

SPOILER ALERT!

Phooey.

“The Voice” viewers chose to keep Wellington’s Cassadee Pope on the NBC vocal competition, while sending (pout) awesomely poised beyond her years “Mohawk Girl” Michaela Paige (oh, America, you were wrong.)

Both ladies were part of Team Blake Shelton, but apparently that didn’t matter in terms of staying or going, because the bottom two vote-getters went home, regardless of team. There were much, much lesser performances on Monday than Michaela’s solid version on Pink’s “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” – like Sylvia Yacoub from Team Christina and her incredibly pitchy screamy-yelly “My Heart Will Go On,” a praised performance that had me going “Are my ears just different than everyone else’s on this planet?”

Michaela was also better than Team Adam’s iconoclast Minnie Mouse Melanie Martinez, who I was sure was going home. I WAS SURE OF IT. I like Melanie, but in the face of really powerful singers who are more than style and a sad back story. I don’t mean to suggest that Melanie and her sweet gap-toothed smile are a ruse – I truly believe that she was picked on, and that her style is authentic and not a put-on. I just wish she’d maybe gone home instead of Michaela, a better singer and someone who wears her equally iconoclastic style with more confidence.
It wasn’t an either/or. America could have chosen both or neither. But Michaela’s more versatile and better singer. Just saying.

As for Cassadee, she had her strongest and most poignant performance this week on “Behind These Hazel Eyes” which she dedicated to her estranged father, a brave and emotionally naked thing to do. I think she needed that – she has a lot of fans and a lot of style, but this week distinguished herself vocally so well, more than she has. And the show’s called “The Voice.” So that’s important. Go, Cassadee.

Moving on, here’s my take on the rest of the folks that are hanging around:

Team Blake: Besides Cassadee, there’s Terry McDermott, the Scottish rocker who is not wearing a mullet, you guys, even though he kind of is. Because he’s not. At all. Though he is. Terry is one of the strongest singers left, although he was flat a couple of times this week. I don’t always love Blake’s song choices for Terry – I think he’d do better with less anthemic numbers that are more dynamic. Remember how great he was on “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which he actually chose and felt in his bones? He needs that connection again, with more than just a feel-good stadium screamer.

Team Cee Lo: Trevin Hunte is a clear audience favorite, with a powerful voice and a moving story about the world’s most evil soul-crushing teacher who told him he was never going to amount to anything.(He classily has not named that teacher, but whoever they are, they suck.) I would like to declare a moratorium on “When A Man Loves A Woman” by anyone else, ever again, because it’s been done. To. Death.

Soul Santa Nicholas David’s save was a no-brainer, or at least should have been, because he’s different and has a voice that could start a slow jam. Cody Belew’s save was less obvious, not because he’s not good, but because I wasn’t sure that his appeal, which is Nouveau George Michael, was for everyone. Apparently it’s for more people than I thought, which is great, because so is he.

Team Christina: Sylvia Yacoub was great when she sang with the piano last week. This week she was every straining singer trying to smile her way through a Celine Dion song, and it wasn’t good. I’m shocked she’s still around. Cutie Dez Duron is charming, but there are stronger singers. But he’s cute. So he gets votes.

Team Adam: Besides Melanie, who we’ve discussed, there’s Amanda Brown, last week’s fierce mic stand-dragging rock Valkyrie who was this week’s living statue. Way disappointing. She got saved anyway. Then there’s Bryan Keith, who I adore uncontrollably because he’s so much unvarnished rock goodness. And he’s cute. (See! I’m shallow too!)

What did you guys think?
